a small binary file
defines current state of physical database
maintain integrity of database
required:
MOUNT state during database start up
to operate the database
Linked to a single database
loss may require recovery
size initially by CREATE DATABASE: MAXDATAFILES,MAXLOGFILES,MAXINSTANCES,MAXLOGMEMEBERS etc.

show parameter control_file
