Every job provides the opportunity to just do your part or the take the initiative work opportunity to learn beyond just doing your part. The more you learn, the more effective you will be.
Take opportunities to go beyond just doing your job. I've never been a data designer but I know PRL better than most data engineers. This makes me a very effective data design reviewer. Another example, is with my current feature. I am involved in the PC development but I spent two weeks doing a sequence flow for call processing so I could better understand how call processing works and how the call processing design interfaces with the PC functionality.
I often read code in other subsystems to better understand that subsystem and its interface with my code. When time permits, I read old requirements and design documents for features I've received questions about but which I did not develop (i.e. like V5 or PBMS for PRA) or spend time on functional area documentation.
If I learn of a new feature I'm interested in but will not be assigned to because it doesn't impact my area, I ask the feature engineer to add my name to the email alias and attend early requirements and scenario meetings.
