Developing a Resolution:
Creating
and Editing a resolution are nearly identical operations, which involve
identical parameter entry windows. "Creating" a resolution pre-fills
the parameter entries with the numbers required to make a standard XGA
resolution. "Editing" a resolution allows the user to choose a starting
set of numbers to pre-fill the parameter entries from an existing
resolution. Since both of these modes follow the same set of rules, we
will treat them the same. Here are the steps required to create a useful
resolution:
1) Gather the timing information for the display
resolution you want to create. This information describes the timing of
the video and synchronization signals that your display needs to
function properly. This timing information is usually described in terms
of "dots" or "pixels" when referring to the horizontal timing
parameters and "lines" for the vertical parameters. You will also need
to know the screen or vertical refresh rate (50-85Hz), the video output
mode (RGB or YPrPb), the sync requirements (H&V, Sync on green, OR
sync on Y), and the H&V sync polarities (-/-, -/+, +/-, +/+). Don't
proceed to the next step until you have this information!
Specific information you must know includes:
Horizontal Total (Dots) Vertical Total (Lines)
Horizontal Active (Dots) Vertical Active (Lines)
Horizontal Sync Width (Dots) Vertical Sync Width (Lines)
Horizontal Back Porch (Dots) Vertical Back Porch (Lines)
Sync Polarity (+/-) Output Mode (RGB or YrPrPb or YUV)
Refresh Rate Hz
Horizontal Total:
This
parameter describes the total number of pixels or "dots" on a line.
This value includes the pixels you can see, and the pixels you can't
see. Currently, this value must be between 800 and 2047, which are the
practical limits.
Horizontal Active:
This parameter
describes the total number of pixels or "dots" on a line that you CAN
see. It does not include the pixels in the blanking period (which
contains the front porch, back porch and sync width). This value must be
less than 2046.
Horizontal Sync Width:
This parameter is
the number of pixels that define the width of the sync pulse. (The sync
pulse is the signal that tells the display it has reached the end of the
line and should start a new line.) This value must be greater than 4
and less than (HTotal - HActive - 2).
Horizontal Back Porch:
This
parameter is the number of pixels that define the gap between the end
of sync and the start of active video. This value must be between 1 and
(HTotal - HActive) - (HSyncWidth) - 1.
Horizontal Front Porch:
Why
isn't there a box for Horizontal Front Porch? Well, once you know the
above four values, you already know the value of the front porch!
Vertical Total:
This
parameter describes the total number of lines in a complete video
frame. This value includes the lines you can see, and the lines you
can't see. Currently, this value must be less than 2047.
Vertical Active:
This
parameter describes the total number of lines that you CAN see. It does
not include the lines in the blanking period (which contains the front
porch, back porch and sync width). This value must be less than 2046.
Vertical Sync Width:
This
parameter is the number of lines that define the width of the sync
pulse. (The sync pulse is the signal that tells the display it has
reached the end of the video frame and should start a new frame.) This
value must be less than (VTotal - VActive - 2).
Vertical Back Porch:
This
parameter is the number of lines that define the gap between the end of
sync and the start of active video. This value must be less than (VTota
l- VActive) - (VSyncWidth).
Vertical Front Porch:
Why
isn't there a box for Vertical Front Porch? Well, once you know the
above four values, you already know the value of the front porch!
Sync Polarity:
The
sync polarity describes whether the sync pulse goes negative or
positive. Most displays have specific settings that they will accept for
certain resolutions, and often this forms a method of signaling the
display what the resolution should be. Each sync, H and V, can be set
independently to be positive or negative.
Output Mode:
Displays
can generally accept RGB and/or YPrPb inputs. Your display may accept
both types of inputs, but often there are restrictions on aspect ratios
and resolutions, so research this closely.
Refresh Rate:
Currently
can run at the following 5 refresh rates: 50Hz, 60Hz, 72Hz, 5Hz and
85Hz. 50Hz, 60Hz, and 75Hz are recommended output frequencies for 50Hz
input sources (PAL), and 60Hz ,72Hz and 85Hz are recommended for 60Hz
input sources (NTSC).
Note: NTSC input is actually at 59.94Hz, so
the output is locked to the input at 59.94Hz, and the 72Hz version is
actually (59.94Hz * (60/50) = 71.93Hz). PAL inputs are true 50Hz inputs,
so when using a PAL input, the outputs are true 50Hz, 60Hz (60/50 *
50Hz), and 75Hz ((75/50) * 50Hz).
Note: While the output at 72Hz
and 75Hz, the user must be careful when choosing these frequencies. Most
new display devices (LCD and DLP projectors, plasma panels, etc.) try
to lock the actual display to the input signal as long as the frequency
is near the "sweet spot" of the unit (which is often 50 or 60Hz). Often,
a display that can accept a 75Hz input, will actually perform frame
rate conversion on the image, and bring the frequency back down to
around 60Hz. Any form of frame rate conversion results in either the
loss of existing frames or the replication of frames. When the
CenterStage increases the frequency of the output to 72 or 75Hz, it does
this by replicating frames as required. If a Display device decreases
the frequency of an input, it must do this by deleting frames as
required. Since one cannot guarantee that the display device will delete
the same frame that was replicated by the processor, the frames seen by
the viewer can have duplicate frames and missing frames, resulting in a
"stuttering" image which is typically known as "judder". Displays that
do not have frame rate conversion, like CRTs, are less prone to this
effect. In any case, choose your refresh rate carefully, and be aware
that this choice will affect the image that you view!
Hints:
1)?Changing
the "Back Porch" value will move the image left or right (Horizontal
setting) or up and down (Vertical setting). Keep in mind that changing
the "Back Porch" number also changes the front porch number.
"TOTAL" = "ACTIVE" + "SYNC WIDTH" + "BACK PORCH" + FRONT PORCH"
2)?Changing
the "Active" lines or pixels setting will increase or decrease the
height or width of the active video. Sometimes adjusting the "Total"
number will change this as well, but this can be dangerous, as it
changes the fundamental timing of the configuration.
3)?If you
see faint vertical stripes or bands when using a pixelated display (LCD,
DLP, Plasma, etc., NOT a CRT), this is caused by the display sampling
the video at a slightly different rate than the CenterStage is
outputting it. Sometimes on the line, the pixel is sampled perfectly,
and other times it may be sampled at the transition between one pixel
and another. This can generally be cured by adjusting the "Active"
number of pixels up or down
or adjusting the total number of pixels per line in the projector or display.
?If
you cannot adjust this parameter in the projector or display, you will
need to create a custom resolution for CenterStage. You can tune it
exactly by following the steps below:
Put a pattern on the screen
that makes the banding easiest to see. Count the number of bands you
see over the width of the display. This number is approximately the
number of pixels you want to decrease or increase in the "Horiz Active"
box.
Increase or decrease the "Horiz Active" pixels on the display.
Recount the number of bands, and compare it with the previous count. If
the number of bands is reduced, you are changing "Active" in the proper
direction, if they increase, you are changing in the wrong direction.
When the "Horiz Active" number is set correctly, the bands should disappear.
