The company, Vale Iron Ore, highlighted in a report sent to the Securities Commission (CVM), the increase in production is due to the extraordinary performance of Carajás, responsible for 70% of the expansion verified. In the first nine months of the year, total production of iron ore totaled 227.5 million tons, an increase of 30.4% over the same period last year.
The Southeast system, which includes units Itabira, Mariana, Minas Central, Corumbá and Annatto, produced 32.6 million tons, 5.1% above the second quarter and 27.8% higher than the same period of 2009. The Southern system, which includes mines Itabiritos, Vargem Grande Paraopeba and produced 20.3 million tons between July and September 2010, an increase of 2.3% over the previous quarter and 29.2% over the same quarter last year.
The company highlighted in the report that the production of Itabiritos was 8.3 million tons, up 5.6% from the previous quarter, representing a new record, influenced by an additional processing unit that began operating in June. In comparison with the same period last year the increase was 53.2%.
