BlackBerry maker RIM unveils tablet computer
BlackBerry smartphone maker Research In Motion Ltd. (RIM) on Monday unveiled a tablet computer named BlackBerry PlayBook, which
however is seen as the company's answer to Apple Inc.'s iPad.
The PlayBook is expected to be available in the United States in early 2011 and later roll out in other international markets, RIM said while introducing the tablet at its annual developers' conference held in San Francisco.
RIM's PlayBook features a seven-inch touch screen, smaller than that of the iPad, and weighs about the same at nearly 400 grams.
Unlike the iPad, the PlayBook has front and rear facing cameras for video capture and video conferencing that can both record HD video at the same time.
It is powered by a dual-core, one gigahertz processor and will run a new operating system called BlackBerry Tablet OS, which is built upon the platform of QNX, a company bought by RIM earlier this year.
PlayBook users can pair the tablet with their BlackBerry smartphone using a Bluetooth connection, RIM said, noting that
however content stored on the smartphone is only temporarily cached on the tablet.
