Paraguay 2, Slovakia 0, Group F

Italy 1, New Zealand 1, Group F

Brazil 3, Ivory Coast 1, Group G, Brazil advances to second round

___

HIGHLIGHTS

New Zealanders celebrated their 1-1 draw with Italy as if they had won the World Cup, removing their shirts and waving them above their heads in tribute to the 78th-ranked Kiwis. New Zealand has two draws and if it can beat Paraguay on Thursday, the Kiwis will move into the second round.

STARS

Luis Fabiano, Brazil, scored twice from close range, including a goal on which he went through three opponents, but also might have used his hand, in a 3-1 victory over Ivory Coast that moved the five-time champions into the second round.

Enrique Vera, Paraguay, scored once and had several other chances, making a strong impact throughout La Albirroja's 2-0 win over Slovakia.

New Zealand keeper Mark Paston made six saves in a 1-1 draw against Italy. The Kiwis managed only one shot on goal, and it went in, by Shane Smeltz. Paston was only beaten on a penalty kick by Vincenzo Iaquinta.

Portugal and North Korea staged one of the greatest games in World Cup history, a match still talked about 44 years later. The rematch comes Monday in Cape Town (7:30 a.m.) in Group G. The remarkable 5-3 quarterfinal Portugal win featured perhaps the best performance by all-time great Eusebio, who led a comeback from a 3-0 deficit to the victory by scoring four times. North Korea is making its first World Cup appearance since, and after a respectable 2-1 loss to Brazil in its opening game, the Koreans should carry some confidence into the match. Portugal will be without key midfielder Deco (left hip injury).

European champion Spain came to the World Cup as a co-favorite with Brazil. Anything less than a victory over the Honduras (2:30 p.m. at Johannesburg) would put the Spaniards in jeopardy of an almost unimaginable first-round exit after they lost their opener to Switzerland. Spain was tentative and lacked its usual creativity in the 1-0 loss to the Swiss. Coach Vicente del Bosque was heavily criticized for his lineup, including not starting striker Fernando Torres and not using midfielder Cesc Fabregas at all.

First place in the group could be determined Wireless AV Converter Surveillance Equipment Wired CCTV Cameras if there is a winner between Chile and Switzerland (10 a.m. at Port Elizabeth). The Swiss already have done better than they did in co-hosting the 2008 European Championship, sparked by goal-scorer Gelson Fernandes and keeper Diego Benaglio. Switzerland has gone 490 minutes in World Cups without yielding a goal. It was knocked out of the 2006 tournament in a shootout by Ukraine in the round of 16.

QUOTABLE

"I think that stopped the nation. It's the most incredible result we've had across the board. As a football coach, it's way above anything we've achieved in the history of the game. "We are always daring to dream. At the World Cup anything is possible — we've seen some strange results — but nothing as big as that one." — New Zealand coach Ricki Herbert said after a 1-1 draw with defending and four-time World Cup champion Italy.
