What Is HP ILO?
Integrated Lights-Out is a processor that Hewlett Packard integrates into many of its servers. HP has released several generations of this processor, but all of these generations specifically operate in tandem with HP’s line of ProLiant and Blade servers. This results from HP’s integration of the iLO interface and tools with its processors and servers.

ILO Details
A primary benefit of the HP iLO processor is that it offers both remote access and remote management to a network system. All of the functions that a nearby manager or technician could perform, the iLO allows a manager or technician to perform from any remote location. This includes the ability to turn the server on or off, perform diagnostics and setup, check the status of the server and perform a variety of security tasks. While the management access is Internet-based, the access is always available so long as the manager or technician has an Internet connection.
What is It Good for?
The HP iLO offers a good solution for data centers that are often remote and may require supervision or management from other locations around the world. Additionally, this processor also has several useful applications within the field of information technology. The HP iLO is particularly popular among outsourced call centers that have management located in a company’s home office.

ILO Updates
It is quite common for HP to release updates to the iLO processors, in addition to releasing newer processor versions. The iLO3 is the most recent version of this processor at the time of publication and includes greater functionality and faster processing speeds. In addition to the various versions, HP also offers updates online or through update DVDs.
A Note on iLO
HP is not the only company that manufactures and integrates iLO processors into its servers. Sun Microsystems and Oracle also have versions of remote server management processors. Alternative iLO processors share compatibility with their respective servers, but achieve many of the same functions as HP’s iLO. Each line of iLO processors, however, also carries its own unique set of vulnerabilities and openings for possible security breaches.
