Issues after installation:
- At first, the USB mouse (and presumably other USB devices) didn't work. It locked up and I was left with only the touch pad for moving the pointer around (and I haaate the touch pad). I fixed this by adding the red text to the following line in /boot/grub/menu.lst:
- kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-10-generic root=/dev/hda7 ro quiet splash noapic irqpoll pci=routeirq
(Note that you will likely have to do this each time a new kernel is installed, because the menu.lst file gets overwritten.)
- SCIM Chinese input didn't work in most apps. Fixed it with instructions from .
- When I previously installed Ubuntu 5.10 (Breezy Badger), I had a problem with the X server; it failed to start. The solution is described on another page I created about . However, I did not have this problem with X after installing Edgy Eft.
- R-Project statistics and graphics software had some trouble with X11 fonts. This was because the fontpaths in /etc/X11/xorg.conf were pointing to the wrong directory. They were pointing to /usr/share/X11/fonts/ by default, but should have been pointing to /usr/share/fonts/X11/. Changing each instance accordingly will solve related problems.
