A+

CompTIA's A+ certification is meant for entry-level computer technicians. The A+ is a vendor-neutral certification that was introduced in 1993 and is now held by over 500,000 people. It has no prerequisites but is widely used as a starting point for various system administration and network administration certifications. For example, the A+, coupled with either the CompTIA Network+ or Server+ certification, can be used as an elective for Microsoft's MCSA certification.

The A+ certification was updated in 2001 and then again in November, 2003. The A+ consists of two exams: the 220-301, Core Hardware; and the 220-302, Operating System Technologies. Both exams, which are offered in English, Dutch, Japanese, Spanish, German and French, are in conventional linear format and consist of approximately 80 questions. Also note that you no longer have to pass both exams within 90 calendar days.

The exams cover: installation, configuration, diagnosing, preventive maintenance and basic networking. The 2003 update consists of material from the 2001 exam plus has the latest on memory, bus, peripheral, Operating Systems (Windows ME and Windows XP) and wireless technologies. Like other CompTIA offerings, once a person achieves the A+ title, the certification will not expire.
