WIFI does not work well in metal structures Knowing that we have the potential of 900 devices (1.5 per user) at any given content time, we have designed a system with nine WAPs. Being able to make all 9 operate as an integrated WIFI system for the building requires a monitoring server on the network controlling all of the WAPs. With the monitoring server, configuration changes to the WAPs as a whole or as individuals can be made with a few mouse clicks. Being able to actively monitor the WIFI traffic across all 9 of the WAPs is crucial, we will want to deny access to any devices that may be using extraordinary amounts of bandwidth (possible virus on device) or shift users from a device that may be overloaded to a nearby WAP that may be running with a lighter load. If a WAP decides to become non-functional or is reaching an overload threshold we can be notified immediately to our phones, so we can log into the server and actively manage and resolve the issue at hand.

Handing out network addresses for 900 physical devices is a huge task for the Opera House because of its compact size and saturation of WIFI requests. Creating overlapping micro-cell networks with the WAPs should balance the loads nicely across all of the access points. A beefy router at the head end of the network able to handle IP addressing as well as the traffic coming through and gigabit speed components will keep the devices happy and moving fast.

WIFI does not work well in metal structures. You may have experienced this in large stores when trying to use your cell phone. The Camden Opera House has been renovated a few times and if you look closely enough there is plenty of plaster and expanded metal installed to hold the plaster in place. HVAC metal ducting runs throughout inside the cracks and crevices that are not readily visible for the regular eye. With the expanded metal for the plaster, and the ductwork, the WIFI design needs to be spot on for proper signal strength and coverage.
