10-day police custody for diamond heist accused
Four foreign nationals, including a woman, involved in the 6.6 crore diamond heist were brought back from Dubai and remanded to 10-day police custody by the Additional Chief
right Metropolitan Magistrate here on Thursday.
Preliminary investigations have revealed the involvement of a fifth member, who is absconding. “We have issued a look-out notice against him,” Himanshu Roy, Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime, said during a press conference here.
The gang is suspected of having committed similar crimes in different parts of the world. Some international companies have approached the Mumbai Crime Branch for investigation into similar heists relating to their companies. The police are also investigating into whether the gang was involved in the Bangalore heist in March this year.
A team of Mumbai Crime Branch went to Dubai on Wednesday and brought the four accused back to Mumbai on Thursday morning; 245 pieces of diamonds were retrieved from them. The rest of the 1,641 diamonds were retrieved from a shipment parcelled by an accused.
The arrested include Gutierez Orlando (30), who is a Venezuelan national, and Gonzalez Maldonado Mauricio (24), Campos Molan Elias (39) and Guerrero Lugo Elvia Grissel (24), who are Mexican citizens. The police are verifying their passports now. As they all are Spanish-speaking, the investigations are being carried out with
right the help of translators.
