Three policemen dragged the man away after he went for the referee in the second-half of the game between Qingdao Zhongneng and visiting Shanghai Shenhua, state media said.
"The man was definitely not a member of staff at our club. He is just an emotional fan," Yu Tao, general manager of Qingdao Zhongneng, told Xinhua news agency.
"The referee failed to control the game well, perhaps he was too young," Yu said.
But a local fan who wished to remain anonymous told Xinhua that the man who went after the referee was an interpreter for the Korean players in the Qingdao team.
After the match about 100 Qingdao fans smashed a car they
sanhein thought was carrying the referee, though the vehicle turned out to belong to the coach of another Chinese Super League club.
