Most shingles will last about 20 years, but any signs of damage, wear or curling could lead to water seeping under the shingles and rotting the wood beneath. Replacement of a damaged shingle will prevent further damage and costly repairs. Repairs to shingles can take three forms; gluing down a shingle that has begun to curl, repairing a cracked shingle or replacing a damaged shingle. Any of these repairs are best done on a warm afternoon when the shingles will be more pliable.
As shingles age the corners may start to curl. This can easily be addressed by applying a bead of roofing sealant under the shingle with a caulk gun. Use a brick or similar weight to keep the shingle in place until the sealant dries, about 24 hours.
Shingles that are cracked don't have to be replaced. You can repair a crack in a shingle by applying a thick bead of roofing sealant with your caulk gun to the underside of the crack. Place a second bead over the crack and spread it evenly with a small putty knife. Now look in the gutter for some of
