Man threatens suicide; five-hour standoff ends peacefully
A near five-hour standoff situation
wicker basketbetween a man and the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office ended peacefully Friday morning.
Deputies responded to a residence on Becks Church Road near N.C. Highway 47 around 8:30 p.m. Thursday after receiving a phone call from a family member saying the man had a weapon and was threatening to do harm to himself.
Deputies said the man was armed with a small-caliber pistol and was putting the weapon in his mouth.
Becks Church Road was shut down as about 20 deputies attempted to negotiate with the man.
Davidson County Sheriff David Grice said the man was not threatening deputies, only himself.
Grice said deputies took cover behind vehicles and talked to the man through an open window at the residence. Family members also spoke to the man.
Around 1:30 a.m., deputies and family members convinced him to come outside and lay down his weapon. He was transported to Lexington Memorial Hospital for evaluation.
Because the man was admitted to the hospital under a mental situation, hospital officials are prohibited from releasing his name. Grice also said the sheriff’s office was not releasing his name. The Dispatch does not print the names of people involved in suicide attempts.
