Police who arrived at the scene of a failed attempt to dig-out an ATM bank machine said they discovered a Caterpillar digger with its engine still running and another Nissan vehicle. They are investigating the attempted theft in south Armagh which saw the thieves take a digger from nearby road works before attempting to rip the ATM from a wall in a family-owned petrol station in Bessbrook. The gang, who had also brought a pick-up vehicle to the scene, were not able to steal the ATM but did cause damage to the brickwork of the building. It is the 19th attempted ATM theft in Northern Ireland in recent months. Officers were quickly at the scene after being alerted by local residents at 7am on Sunday. Hotel lock in the Faculty of Life and Health Sciences at the University of Ulster's Coleraine campus has drowned in the River Bann. It happened on Sunday when he was leading a group, including his son, across a dangerous weir when his canoe overturned. Stephen Chapman fell from his boat and was trapped in the water at Carnroe Lock on Sunday at about 2pm and, despite frantic efforts by emergency workers and a doctor who was also in the canoe team, he died. Mr Chapman, who was in his 40s, lived with his family in Coleraine.

Hotel lock on Substance Abuse and Suicide Awareness (FASA) and Police launched new operational protocols (DROPZONE -Drug Removal and Operational Protocols) at an event hosted by the High Sheriff of Belfast, Councillor Frank McCoubrey in Belfast City Hall today. FASA and Police believe that everyone has a role to play in the removal of harmful substances from the home and local areas, making communities a safer place for all. Both agencies are endeavouring to enhance the safety and wellbeing of local communities by providing a confidential service to facilitate concerned citizens in the safe and secure surrendering of both legal and illegal drugs from society.
