Men who drink # beer may reduce their chances of developing prostate cancer, scientists have discovered.
A new study has revealed that a compound in beer, xanthohumol, blocks a chemical reaction that can lead to the development of cancer, Sky News UK reports.
The disease is usually treated with drugs that act in a similar way.
Research leader Dr Clarissa Gerhausa, from the German Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg, said: "We hope that one day we can demonstrate that xanthohumol prevents prostate cancer development, first in animal models and then in humans, but we are just at the beginning."
Xanthohumol, which is also found in fruits and nuts, is a powerful antioxidant and is known to have anti-cancer properties.
It was previously suggested that the chemical could reduce the chances of breast cancer in women.
Further research involving
hydraulic rats results showed that xanthohumol reduced the effects of hormone signaling in prostate tissue.
