Lightly cover with moistened soil
To make an indoor container, you need to collect moss from
baby outside. The best time for this is in early spring when it is cooler and soil is still moist. You'll need to collect only small pieces because you don't plant sheets of moss. The moss is dried, ground up and then spread over the container as powder.
You can dry moss on newspaper in a cool, dry area. Once dry, place moss in a blender with a little water on low speed until there are fine pieces.
To establish moss in a container, use a potting mix because moss benefits from an acidic pH and is moisture-retentive. Fill a container — one with holes for drainage. Gently water the soil surface. Prepare a solution of 1 part buttermilk to 3 to 4 parts water and cover the surface. Spread the moss dust evenly over this mixture. Lightly cover with moistened soil. Keep the soil misted and moist until the moss becomes established.
