Nippon plans to sell the steel pipes to Japanese automakers in
Support India which include the likes of Maruti Suzuki and Honda. Maruti already sources some flat steel products from Nippon in Japan.
Mr Subir Moitra, head of the company's supply chain said, “We would definitely like to source the steel pipes from Nippon when they set up a domestic facility. However, it would be too early to say if the procurement prices come down.”At present, Maruti Suzuki the steel pipes for its vehicles from TI India of the Murugappa group.
This is the third time in the last year that a Japanese steelmaker has targeted the Indian auto market. JFE recently picked up a 14.98 per cent stake in JSW to produce auto-grade steel while Sumitomo Metals signed a deal with Bhushan Steel.
