Machines can do better public services that citizens often see as inefficient
DustCart is currently being tried at a nearby town both for street cleaning and home differentiated waste disposal.
Town dwellers, dialing a special phone number,
tangbo can directly call upon the one-man-tall robot just like it were a taxi, get in touch with its internal software via key-pads and give instructions according to their needs.
Mazzolai stressed the importance of service-applied robotics in facilitating human work and life and in assisting local authorities in dealing with environmental and urban hygiene-related issues.
"Machines can do better public services that citizens often see as inefficient and of which they're unsatisfied, such as road cleaning and waste treatment.
tangbo This is why the CRIM lab is cooperating with many Italian public authorities on important urban service projects. Local officials have understood the benefit of using robots in their towns," noted Mazzolai.
Robots can be vital in the fight against climate change and environmental catastrophes as well.
One pioneering study of the Sant' Anna lab is centered on the "water robot network" that can operate in all sorts of aquatic habitats -- sea, lakes and rivers -- to monitor the level of polluting materials.
"These would be perfect in tackling for example the oil spill in Louisiana because robots can reach sea depths that are too dangerous for human beings," she said.

The CRIM lab is thus focusing on bio-robotics aimed at increasing embodied-intelligence, machine sensibility and morphology.
