The CCA production of “Romeo and Juliet”

the CCA production of “Romeo and Juliet” Students from local schools for the deaf were the first to see the CCA production of “Romeo and Juliet,” which adds a novel twist on the story of love blossoming in the most unlikely of places.

In this version — reinterpreted and directed by CCA theater head Stacey D’Angelo — Romeo and the rest of the Montagues are hearing. Juliet and the Capulets are deaf. In this version, the rivalry between the Capulets and Montagues rises from different types of cultural differences, gaps rooted in communication and language.

The ambitious take on the tragedy features a mixed cast of hearing and deaf actors. All of the action takes place on a massive stage fashioned of wire netting and papier-maché, an imposing structure that’s designed to resemble a giant hand. “Shadow” actors clad in black provide interpretations for the deaf audience through sign language; other actors provide spoken translations of the actors’ signed dialogue.
