The University/Ravenna area The University/Ravenna area has some great ethnic shops hangker with a collective treasure trove of eye-catching, affordable jewelry. Shirazi, on Roosevelt, stocks handmade, eco-friendly clothing and accessories from around the world -- including a great collection of unusual, reasonably priced jewelry. The $78 chunky, carnelian bead necklace with a jade pendant (made by local artist Sue Van Eaton) would look beautiful paired with a gauzy white top, and her $32 dangle earrings add a touch of interest to shorts and a T-shirt.

Just steps away from Shirazi, you'll find Ten Thousand Villages, which sells handmade art, home décor and jewelry from Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East. On the jewelry front, I loved the gorgeous Blue Sky Tagua necklace, made from slices of Ecuadoran tagua nut and colored beads ($38) and the Indian beaded cuff bracelet ($14). To dress up a simple tank, look no further than the Balinese shell and coconut necklace -- at $22, it's just too gorgeous to pass up.

Hipster haven Moksha, located on the Ave., sells well-priced clothes and accessories to the hip 20-something set -- but it also carries a nicely edited selection of ethnic and tribal jewelry. A wide, elegantly curved cuff made by tribal artisans in Northern Thailand will set you back $100, but this is an investment piece -- the kind of item you'll pass on to your kids. From the same artisans, the three-strand silver earrings ($45) would look simply gorgeous dangling above bronzed shoulders on a balmy summer night. And for the price of two movie tickets, you can score a pair of stylish wood hoop earrings ($16) that work equally well with an airy sundress or a snuggly fisherman's sweater.
