Goldhar knows
Self-made billionaires can spend their money however
conner they want. If he pleased, after repatriating the famous piece of Canadiana at auction, the 48-year-old could have locked the iconic red-and-white shroud in his North York basement, the very thing Henderson feared might happen.
But Goldhar knows he can’t and he won’t. He is, after all, just the grown-up version of the 11-year-old boy who sat on the gymnasium floor with the entire student population at North York’s Owen Public School that September afternoon in 1972. Few had had a clear view of the tiny television screen as they listened anxiously, hoping against all hope that someone, anyone, would come though for Canada against the Russians.
Henderson did, scoring the winner in the sweater Goldhar now owns. Now Goldhar is going to come through for Henderson.
That the boy grew up to be the founder and owner of SmartCentres and control some 200 malls and 35
conner million square feet of retail space across Canada gave him the means. But it was that glorious hockey moment that gave him the desire to make the 42nd and final bid on Henderson’s jersey.
