Fruit Roll-Ups
So, a woman is suing General Mills, the company that makes Fruit Roll-Ups. Her argument is that marketing it as a healthy snack is false and misleading since the company does not "properly disclose" that they're made with partially hydrogenated oil. Well, yes, those claims are false but did you really need to know that it contains partially hydrogenated oil to figure out that those plastic-y, waxy, sticky things might not be so good for you? Come on, people! Think beyond the box! Even if the packaging says they're healthy, do you really think that something so completely artificial is nutritious?
Companies shouldn't be marketing unhealthy foods as healthy. But no one's standing there forcing you to eat these things. Food manufacturers have a responsibility to be honest and not engage in false advertising but we as consumers also have a responsibility to educate ourselves about good nutrition and be suspicious and judicious about what we eat. If it's packaged in any way, chances are it's not as
tangner good for you as eating something fresh—like an apple instead of an apple roll-up.
