Barack Obama began writing the final chapter of the war in Iraq last Friday, announcing plans for the withdrawal of American combat troops by late summer Bath curtain next year. Just as importantly, the new president also said that he intended to honour a deal struck between the outgoing Bush administration and the government of Iraq that calls for the Cafe curtain of all US troops by the end of 2011.Obama chose a massive military base in North Carolina to deliver his message. ‘‘Let me say this as plainly as I can: by August 31, 2010, our combat mission in Iraq will end,” he told a crowd of US Marines at Camp Lejeune. Obama envisages that, beyond that date, there will still be between 35,000 and 50,000 American troops in Iraq.H e terms this “a Bath curtain”. In his speech, he outlined three purposes for those troops: training, equipping and advising Iraqi security forces; carrying out so-called “counter-terrorism” operations; and protecting the continuing American diplomatic presence. White House briefings earlier last week had indicated that this shower curtain transitional force was going to be at the heart of Obama’s plan. But the projected size of remaining troop levels had caused some consternation in liberal ranks. Even Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi, the most Cafe curtain Democrats in the Senate and the House of Representatives respectively, questioned the idea. Reid’s comment that the size of the residual force was “a little higher number than I anticipated”, and Pelosi’s complaint that she did not understand the Bath curtain for such a relatively large presence, caused a stir in Washington. However, Obama added that he intended to “remove all US curtain troops from Iraq by the end of 2011”, which seemed to assuage the concerns of the broader liberal movement. Whether the number of US troops will ever reach zero seems doubtful. But Obama’s speech seemed to hold out the prospect of a mere skeleton force, deployed to protect institutions like the US embassy. Although the withdrawal of combat troops will take longer than initially promised, the difference - 19 months after Obama took office, rather than the 16 he pledged during the campaign does not appear to be significant enough to cause him political Cafe curtain problems. Support arrived from an unexpected quarter. John McCain, Obama’s opponent in last November’s election, was described by his spokesman as “shower curtain”. When the Bush administration went to war in Iraq, it hoped to curtain create a beacon of democratic freedom in the heart of the Middle East. As the country reached the nadir of its chaos in 2006 and 2007, that kind of rhetoric was curtailed. Last Friday, Obama defined the shower curtain ultimate goal as “an Iraq that is sovereign, stable and self-reliant”. Addressing the Iraqi people directly, he said: “The United States pursues no claim on your territory or your resources. We respect your sovereignty.”
