This book is an abridged and adapted translation of the same author‘s doctoral thesis Saga daganna， published in 1993， a work of ethnological research whose aim is to explore the origins and development of certain festive days and periods which play a role in Icelandic history。 The role of natural phenomena， methods of work and social factors in the way the people of Iceland celebrated is particularly explored.

 

 The festive days which are discussed in this book very greatly，although the aim has been to include all those high days and holidays which were of importantce to the nation as a whole，or a considerable part of it.Less space is devoted to those celebrations and customs which are familiar internationally, and more to those which are specifically Icelandic.

  As is often the case in ethnological research , many other discipleines are involved, such as literary and linguistic research ,etymology and archaeology , but especially the various branches of history, such as ecoethnologist must concentrate upon the detail, which enables him to see events on a human scale.
