How to Install Office Groove Server Manager 2007 on Windows Server 2008
Starting with Office Groove Server 2007 SP1, Microsoft is now supporting the deployment of Office Groove Server on Windows Server 2008. In reviewing some materials for the 70-555 certification exam, I noticed there is almost no documentation or comments on installing the Groove Server Manager components on Windows Server 2008, so I thought I would share the steps here.
Get the Groove Install Media Ready
Before you install Office Groove Server 2007, you will need to add the SP1 components to the installation media. Microsoft no longer uses a slipstream approach to installing Office components when new service packs come out. Instead, there is a folder called "Updates" where you place the MSP files used to deploy SP1. Now, the trick is Microsoft does not provide the download in an MSP format. So, you need to extract the MSP files first. To do this, open a command prompt and navigate to the folder where the EXE file is stored. Then, you will enter the EXE name followed by "/extract:[Location]". So, if my EXE was named GrooveServerSP1.exe and I wanted to put the MSP files on C:\GrooveSP1, I would enter "GrooveServerSP1.exe /extract:"c:\GrooveSP1".
Now that you have your MSP files, place them in the "Updates" folder. You can then burn the image to a disk or just run the installation from disk when you are ready.
Get Windows Server 2008 Ready
Before you begin, I will assume you have installed Windows Server 2008 already and you did not use the Core Version. You cannot run Office Groove Server 2007 on a Core installation of Windows Server 2008.
Open Server Manager and click the link to Add New Roles
Select the IIS Web Server Role
You will now need to add the features used by Groove. Make sure you select Windows Authentication, ASP.NET, and the IIS 6 components.
You will be prompted to add other features to support this role configuration. Accept these features and then complete the installation.
Install Office Groove Server 2007 on Windows Server 2008
Now that you have the media ready and Windows Server 2008 ready, you can begin the installation.
First, make sure you configure Windows Firewall if it is on to support the Groove communication protocols. So, you will need TCP 2492 Inbound and Outbound, 443 Inbound and Outbound, and 80 Inbound and Outbound, 389 outbound, 25 Outbound, and 8009 Outbound.
Now, install Office Groove Server 2007 Server Manager through the new media you created.
Office Groove Server 2007 should find IIS correctly and install all of the components including registering an ISAPI filter called GSM.DLL.
When the installation is done, the Groove Server Manager console should open and be fully functional.
