The HP CIFS Product Suite

The HP CIFS Client and Server suite provide a broad and flexible range of Unix-Windows interoperability strategies for HP-UX. The Common Internet File System (CIFS) is the native networking protocol in Microsoft Windows operating systems. Hewlett Packard's CIFS product suite integrates HP-UX with Microsoft Windows environments by providing remote file sharing, printer access and authentication services between HP-UX and Windows systems.

HP CIFS includes both Client and Server bundles for HP-UX. The CIFS Client allows HP-UX systems to mount file systems on Windows, the HP CIFS Server, Samba, and other CIFS servers, and access them locally, in a manner similar to NFS, but with greater security. The HP CIFS Server provides remote access to its local filesystem to Windows, the HP CIFS Client, and other CIFS clients; Windows clients can also access the HP CIFS Server's printers.

The CIFS products include HP's industry-leading CIFS Unix Extensions, which allow connections between CIFS Clients and Servers to utilize Unix filesystem attributes within the CIFS protocol. The CIFS Client bundle also includes a Pluggable Authentication Module, PAM-NTLM, which allows HP-UX logins to be authenticated on a CIFS domain.

HP CIFS Server: Features and Benefits:

  • Based on the open source server software Samba
  • Full enterprise-level service and support from HP.
  • Integration with HP-UX Kerberos, Netscape Directory Server (J4258CA) and Red Hat Directory Server (NSDirSvr7).
  • Can serve as a Windows ADS Domain Member server or as a Samba Domain Controller.
  • Support for CIFS Unix Extensions.
  • Administration of HP-UX POSIX Access Control Lists (ACL) from Windows Clients.
  • High Availability (HA) CIFS server solution when used with HP-UX Service Guard.
  • Web-based configuration and management using the Samba Web Administration Tool (SWAT.)
  • "use mmap" enabled for improved performance.
  • HP-UX 11i v3 support for CIFS File System Module, promoting the integrity of files during concurrent local, NFS, and CIFS client access by ensuring mutual respect for file locks.
  • No-charge product

  • This is a fix release based on Samba Server version 3.0.22 with selected fixes from 3.0.25 -- 3.0.30 and includes HP specific defect fixes.
  • Security fixes: CVE-2008-1105, ported from Samba-3.0.30.
  • Refer to the following Release Note for particular fixes in the release.

Availability:

HP CIFS product suite is provided free with HP-UX 11i Application Releases. It is a standard component of HP-UX 11i Operating Environments. Both CIFS Server and CIFS Client products are included.
