Problem

VxVM (VERITAS Volume Manager) command vxdisksetup will fail for environments with Solaris patch 147440-20  and later.

Error

Example error:

#  /etc/vx/bin/vxdisksetup -i c4t500601613CE02533d10
VxVM vxdisksetup ERROR V-5-2-43 c4t500601613CE02533d10: Invalid disk device for vxdisksetup

Note: An attempt to initialize a disk(s)  with command `vxdisk init` with format type sliced or simple will fail.

# vxdisk init c0t0d0 format=sliced
VxVM vxdisk ERROR V-5-1-5433 Device c0t0d0: init failed:
Disk VTOC does not list private partition

Environment

Solaris 10 with kernel patch 147440-20 or later

Storage Foundation 5.1

or

Storage Foundation 6.0

Cause

A un-initialized variable gets a different value after OS (Operating System) patch installation, thereby making vxparms command outputs give an incorrect result.

Solution

Workaround

  • Downgrade to a lower revision of patch, for example Solaris Patch 147440-19.
  • For the Volume Manager default 'cdsdisk' format only, one can use the command `vxdisk init ` to initialize the disk.

Solution:

  • For Storage Foundation version 5.1 the fix is available in General Availability release for SPARC architecture and for Intel x86_64 architecture.
  • The Storage Foundation 6.0.1 release has the General Availability fix in patch  for SPARC architecture and for Intel x86_64 architecture
