Sun SL500 Microsystems       Corporation CODE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

SECTION: I

PURPOSE:  Upgrade SL500 Code

DESCRIPTION:  Instructions for upgrading SL500 Code.

CSE HOURS: 1.0  MACH. HOURS: 1.0  SYSTEM HOURS: 1.0  NO. of CSEs: 1

SECTION: II

Cautions:

1. If the RLC card has the newer flash part you will not be able to downgrade from 1200 code. If the RLC card has the older flash part then downgrade below 1200 code is possible, but the flash operation will take an additional 20 minutes (30 minutes total). Up leveling the code will take 5 minutes longer (15 minutes total). Failure to wait for the flash operation to complete will result in damage to the RLC card and the RLC card will no longer be usable.

The newer RLC part number is 419940201.  The old part number is 313906413. The part numbers can be located on the RLC card.

1.         If the robot contains the newer EV15 scanner, robot hardware revision level 004, then only 1200 code or above will work in the library. The new Robot assembly with the EV15 scanner has the part number 419946801 or higher.

2.        Again: Do not reboot or power-cycle the library prematurely during the code download or installation process as it will permanently damage the controller (RLC) card, necessitating a return of the card to the factory.

3.        The SL500 1200 code is not compatible with the RLW SCSI LVD interface card. If installed with 1200 code the blue RLW EJECT OK LED will stay illuminated and the SCSI interface will not be recognized on the SCSI buss. Upgrade to 1201 or higher code if an RLW SCSI LVD interface card is to be used.

DETAILS of INSTALLATION:

There are three ways to load code into the SL500, two through the Ethernet port labeled PUBLIC and one  through the RS232 port labeled CLI. The library can be used by the customer up until the “reboot” portion of the upgrade.

Code Upgrade Procedure using the SLC

(Requires Streamline Library Console version  FRS_2.20.00 or higher):

1           If this is the first time you are logging into this SL500, you will need an activation password for the “service”, “admin”, and/or “oem” login for the library serial number you are installing code on. Obtain this from the CRC or call center before starting the procedure.

2           Login to SLC using admin, OEM, service or advsrv accounts.

3           Select Tools->Diagnostics on the menu bar. The Diagnostic screen should be visible.

4           Select the [Load Code] tab under the Library portion of the screen. The File selection screen should appear beneath the [Load Code] tab.

5           If the path/filename is not known: Select the button. The Open window should appear.

6           Navigate through file system to select the desired *.img file (see code compatibility - table 1).

Note: If upgrading to 1200 or greater code for the first time, the patch 1190 must be installed before the 1200 code. Install 1190 patch but do not reboot afterward. Execute this step (6) through step 14 with the exception of

where it asks the question, “Do you want to reboot the entire library now?" Answer no to this. Then repeat steps 6 through 15 for 1200 code then answer yes to the reboot question.

1           Select the button to invoke the Code Download process. The SLConsole -- Code Load window should appear with the following message: "Code load to LC may take up to 10 minutes to complete.     Do you want to continue?".

2           Select the button to confirm the decision to invoke the Code Download process. The Transferring file progress bar should continuously indicate the progress of the file download process.

The Unpack Console will then indicate the progress of the Unpack process (an example is shown below):

Unpack started Successful   4.04.11_ppcboot.bin Successful   4.04.11:9756A_libs.cramfs Successful   3.85.14_kernel.pImage Successful   4.04.26_disk.rlc.pImage Successful   5.85.16:9754A_green.tarball Successful   5.85.16:9754A_lop.cramfs Unpack completed -- Final Unpack Status -Successful 6 Failed 0

At this point, if Failed=0 the Code Download and Code Unpack processes were successfully completed.  If Failed is greater than zero, then attempt the download one more time.  If a second failure occurs, then try one of the other download methods, such as over Ethernet via the dnld account.  If the download succeeds at this point then this might be an indication of a corrupted .img file.

9. Select the [Activate Code] tab under the Library portion of the Diagnostics screen. The Activate Code screen should appear beneath the [Activate Code] tab.

10. Select the pulldown arrow of the Target list.

11. Select the SL500 Code line item on the Target pull down list.

(Note: This probably will be the only member of the list.) If steps 1 through 8 above were successfully completed, then there should be at least two listed code versions in the Available Versions console.

(Note: The code version on the list that is preceded with a '*' character indicates the currently running code version.)

12. Select the 1190 or 1200code that is NOT preceded with the '*' characte

13. Select the button to invoke the code activation process.

The SL Console window should appear with the following message: "Activation may take up to 10 minutes to complete. DO NOT REBOOT OR POWER OFF ANY DEVICES ON THE TARGET SYSTEM DURING THE ACTIVATE

OPERATION. DOING SO MAY DAMAGE THE SYSTEM. Do you want to continue activation?".

14. Select the button on the SL Console window to confirm the decision to invoke the code activation process. The Activation Console will then indicate the progress of the Code Activation  process (an example is shown below):

Activation started

Skipped Image : green.tarball, Device : 1,0,0,0 Version : 5.85.19

Skipped Image : ppcboot.bin, Device : 1,0,0,0 Version : 4.04.11

Activation successful -- Final Activation Status -Successful 0 Skipped 6 Failed 0

The SLConsole -- Reboot window should appear after a successful activation process is completed with the following message: "The new version of the code will be executed after the library is rebooted.

Do you want to reboot the entire library now?"

Note: this step applies to 1200 code only.  Do not reboot the 1190 patch.

1.       Select the button on the SLConsole -- Reboot window. The library should reboot. The SLC Console may logoff and revert to its logon screen. The SLConsole -- Help window may appear with the following message: "Connection to server time out".

2.       Select the button on the SLConsole -- Help window.

3.       If necessary, select Tools->Logoff on the menu bar. The SLConsole -- Confirm window appears witht the following message: "Do you want to log off SLConsole session?".

4.       Select the button on the SLConsole -- Confirm window. The SLC Client Application should revert to its logon screen.

5.       The process is completed.
