Sheriff Guy Desjardin says 40-year-old Antonio Abreu, who's originally from the Bronx, New York, climbed a chain link fence during an outdoor recreation period, went over two strands of razor wire, ran across a roof and fell while attempting to go over another fence and strand of razor wire. "And we believe he either lost his grip or tripped, and he fell to the ground, we believe, laying on his back," Desjardin says.
Desjardins say Abreu suffered a severe head injury and was transported to Central Maine Medical Center. The hospital would neither confirm nor deny that Abreu was at the hospital. Desjardins says Abreu was at the jail awaiting trial on a probation violation. The sheriff says the jail has cancelled outdoor recreation as it investigates the incident.
