Poland to hold presidential elections in June
Poland's acting President Bronislaw Komorowski has set June 20 as the date for presidential elections, almost four months ahead of the original schedule.
A second round of elections will be held on July 4 if need be, according to a decree signed by Komorowski on Wednesday.
Komorowski brought forward the elections following the death of President Lech Kaczynski in a plane crash in western Russia on April 10.
By April 26, wound-be candidates must submit their names to the National Electoral Commission aftergathering the signatures of 1,000 voters and creating a campaign team of at least 15 members.
By May 6, campaign teams will have to submit names of their presidential candidates together with 100,000 signatures supporting each given candidate.
So far the only confirmed candidate in the presidential race is Komorowski, supported by the ruling Liberal Civic Platform. Komorowski, in his capacity as parliament speaker, took over presidential duties after Kaczynski's death.
