an unsigned painting is not valuable I have to break the bad news to many people that just because something is old that doesn't mean it is automatically valuable. I have junk, you have junk, my grandmother had junk, sometimes it is just older junk! Age is not an automatic indicator of value. Don't forget, some newer items can be valuable too.

When it comes to paintings, works by dead artists are not always more valuable than works by living artists. So many people are seemingly waiting for that artist to die so the prices for their work spike. Of course, a market correction may take place because an artist is dead and can no longer produce work for the market, but that doesn't mean it is wise to discount or devalue the work of living artists.

Also with regard to painting, many folks are misguided in their belief that unsigned works of art are not valuable. It is incorrect to think that an unsigned painting is not valuable. In fact, depending on the work of art, the artist, and the period in which the work was produced, many valuable pieces remain unsigned intentionally. Don't believe that just because you can't find a signature that your piece is worthless. Also, many works of art are not signed in the most obvious places. Also, signatures are easy to forge so make sure that the signed work that however you are buying has an authentic signature. Authenticity impacts value too.
