A pearl is formed when a bead or nucleus is introduced into the oyster or shellfish. When this happens, the shellfish reacts to the bead as an irritant or foreign body, naturally producing a substance called nacre to coat the bead, thereby protecting the inside of the shellfish. The nacre is what gives the pearl its luster.
