And then there are the offers we receive by mail, phone and online from companies vying for our business. Some urge us to take advantage of their special package deals: "For only x dollars a month, we will provide you with telephone, television, cable and Internet services." Which company is most dependable and charges the least are among the questions that come to mind when considering our options.
I procrastinate when I need to make a decision, yet I realize the alternative is scary. I had a dose of being under the control of others when I was confined to a hospital and a rehabilitation center a couple years ago. Then, I rose, showered, ate meals, swallowed medications, and went to bed at the behest of a nurse’s aid or a nurse. I was not even allowed to go to the bathroom on my own.
One early morning I buzzed for a nurse to accompany me to the bathroom, as I had at the same time for several days. When she arrived, I greeted her with a "Good morning," and then added, "We have to stop meeting this way." It was the first time I saw her smile.
