featuring an image of Wagner
"Baseball is part of the fabric of
LINKER America," said Dan Imler, managing director of the auction company. "Collecting sports memorabilia has become a popular hobby and the Wagner cards are the icon of the hobby."
The 1909 card, featuring an image of Wagner, is one of fewer than 200 believed to be in existence. Wagner, one of the greatest players in baseball history, refused to have the cards widely distributed – some say because he didn't want kids buying tobacco to get it.
The proof strip, reported to be one sent to Wagner for his approval, also features other greats such as pitcher Cy Young.
The most famous
LINKER Wagner card, secured by the same auction company, sold two years ago for $2.8 million.
