Apple sells a million iPads in first month
Apple, which launched its hand-held tablet computer on April 3, announced yesterday that it has sold more than 1m iPads.
The one millionth sale was on Friday. So far the early owners have downloaded more than 12m applications from Apple's app store and 1.5m electronic books from its new iBookstore.
Steve Jobs, co-founder and chief executive of Apple, said the pace of sales more than twice as fast as the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with the iPhone.
Mr Jobs admitted the company is continuing to have supply issues with the iPad and that these could worsen when the product goes on sale around the world at the end of this month.
An exact date for the iPad release in the UK has not yet been confirmed. Apple has said it will be available in late May, but that it will begin accepting pre-orders on its UK website from May 10.
The strength of the sales is not expected to cannibalise sales of Apple's larger Mac computers, however.
A straw-poll survey by Maynard Um, a technology analyst at UBS, found that 94pc of people queuing for an iPad last Friday did not expect to use the tablet as a replacement for other computers or laptops.
