U.S. stocks closed
as the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 18 points to 9772, the S&P 500 rose 3 points to 1045 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 8 points to 2057. Among the companies whose shares are actively trading in the after-hours session are Charles River Laboratories International Inc. (CRL), Hartford Financial Services Group Inc. (HIG) and Kraft Foods Inc. (KFT).
Charles River's third-quarter profit fell 18% as the provider of research products and services posted lower sales volume. The company also cut its full-year outlook. Shares fell 5.7% to $35 in after-hours trading.
Hartford Financial's third-quarter loss--its fifth in a row--narrowed on improving equity markets. Shares gained 6.5% to $27.50 in after-hours trading as the struggling life insurer's results topped Wall Street's expectations and it raised
2009 guidance sharply.
