Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir and South African President Thabo Mbeki have been holding talks in Capetown to discuss the deteriorating situation in Darfur and the deployment of additional peacekeeping troops there. Sudanese officials want South Africa to contribute troops to the force. VOA's Scott Bobb reports from Johannesburg.

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir and South African President Thabo Mbeki held talks Tuesday on efforts to speed up deployment of international peacekeepers to the troubled Darfur region in western Sudan.

Mr. Bashir's advisor, Mustafa Ismail, told national radio that Sudan has accepted a combined force of troops from the African Union and the United Nations. But he indicated his government prefers soldiers primarily from African countries.

"Currently now we have 7,000 African troops. We need to increase them up to 26,000. Sudan wants South Africa to increase the number of South African soldiers in Darfur," said Ismail.

Officially, South Africa has not sent any troops to Sudan. It says its forces are stretched thin by contributions to peacekeeping missions in Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Reconciliation efforts in Sudan have been plagued by problems.

Peace talks on Darfur recently stalled when several rebel groups refused to attend reconciliation talks in Libya.

In addition, former southern rebels last month withdrew from the government in Khartoum accusing it of failing to implement a power sharing agreement by delaying the withdrawal of government troops from their oil-rich region.

Mr. Mbeki played an important role in forging a peace accord in 2005 that ended the 21-year civil war in southern Sudan.

The southern civil war killed an estimated two million people and made four million homeless.

International mediators say they hope to forge an accord in Darfur where 200,000 people have died and more than two million have been displaced.

A coalition of 180 religious and human rights groups Monday called for an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council saying the lack of progress in the Darfur peace negotiations was leading to an escalation of violence.

The Sudanese government has reacted by saying that the latest difficulties are primarily technical.

(US, China to Launch Military Hotline)

China and the United States have agreed to open a military hotline. U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced the decision Monday at a joint press conference with Chinese Defense Minister Cao Gangchuan. He did not say how soon the hotline would be established. China's official Xinhua news agency said the link was the first of its kind that Beijing has established with another country at the defense ministry level.

Gates is in Beijing for talks to strengthen ties between the United States and China. Ahead of the visit, Gates said he did not see China as a military threat to the United States. But he voiced concern over an 18 percent increase in China's military spending to a level equivalent to 45-billion dollars.

(PetroChina Becomes World's Top-Valued Company)

China's state-run oil company PetroChina has become the world's largest company by market value, overtaking U.S. ExxonMobil Corporation as its shares surged during their debut on the Shanghai stock exchange Monday. PetroChina's shares almost tripled in value shortly after opening. The company, which is a unit of state-owned China National Petroleum Corporation, is the country's biggest oil and gas producer.

PetroChina previously listed in Hong Kong and New York and its total market value now exceeds one trillion dollars, which is well above ExxonMobil's value of 488-billion dollars. Market analysts note that the high price of PetroChina shares reflects Chinese investors frenzy for stocks and the speculative nature of Chinese markets. PetroChina's market value is much higher than its earnings, and has little relation to profitability.

He's trying to mess up your head and life

Q: I'm 20 years old and just want to be happy. Two years ago, I met this guy and fell head over heels in love. I got pregnant and had his daughter in January. I wanted to be a family and settle down, but he was caught between me and his ex-girlfriend.

I decided to go back to make our relationship work for my daughter's sake, and it got worse. I found him cheating and the ex-girlfriend got pregnant and had his child. He couldn't be honest, and the ex was always saying he was her man.

We then broke up and I found another man, and we've been together for two months. Everything between us is perfect, but the problem now is that my baby's father is telling me he loves me and that he will do anything to get me back.

He's finished with his ex and all he wants is me. I have feelings for both guys but I want to be with the person that will make me happy and not break my heart.

Who do you see me with and who's telling me the truth? This is my future and also my daughter's.

Signed, C

A: Your ex is down on his luck with no girlfriend and nowhere to go, so it's time to call and mess up your head and life. He didn't appear so humble when he had a whole pack of you on the go, chasing his affection. I vote for the new guy all the way, if you want to know any happiness at all, and skip the heartache a second time around.

Being with him was like being in hell so now tell him to go live in that insanity by himself, because you and your daughter are staying in the safety zone just where you are.

Q: I've known this guy for seven years and been with him eight months. I'm 34 years old with four kids of my own, and he has three kids.

He's a wonderful guy but I've been through a lot with men -- abuse both physical and emotional -- and now that I'm in this relationship, I have a lot of trust issues. It got so bad that he broke up with me, but I still feel that he cheated on me. All that I had asked for was honesty and that he shouldn't lie to me -- was that too much?

Are we meant to be or should I just focus on my kids and myself? Will we ever get back together?

Signed, Trust Issues

A: You have managed to be friends with him seven years, and should have had more trust in him. Your issues -- although very real -- are destroying you and will ruin many good things to come if you can't resolve them.

I don't see him being the right person for you anyway because I don't sense that you are in love with him. It's more like you are settling for what you thought would be safe.

Leave it as it is, get some counselling and focus on healing yourself. Then you'll find the right man for you and be happier with your kids.

Daily Affirmation

Love does not necessarily live where there is comfort and we need to know the difference to be happy.
