Packet Loss Characterization in WiFi-based Long Distance Networks
by Anmol Sheth (UC Boulder)
Comments: this paper is a comprehensive analysis of Packet Loss in WiLD, but the remedies are elementary .
This paper classifies different types of packet loss in WiFi-based Long Distance Networks and summarize causes of packet loss. Finally, they provide several possible remedies to reduce packet loss.
In this paper, packet losses are categorized into two sets:
1. channel losses
external wifi interference, non-wifi interference, multipath interference
external wifi interference is main cause
2. protocol-induced losses
1. ack timeout
2. breakdown of CSMA due to propagation delay
Remedies to mitigate external WiFi interference:
1. Frequency channel adaptation
2. Rate adaptation (something interesting is that lowering the rate exacerbate loss)
3. FEC
