        辜先生唯皇帝马首是瞻，抱着复古的观念不放。许多先锋文化的代表人物都批判他。鄙人想起在大学时，校园里有一位叱咤风云的哲学博士，名叫张鸣久。他在学校做了一场报告，题目大概是《中国为什么没有男人？》。他的观点和辜先生截然相反，认为中国的传统文化使中国男人失去了阳刚之气，使中国男人变得爱玩心眼，女里女气。辜先生所褒扬的，恰是他所鄙弃的。

        毫无疑问，中国男人确实有其docile（温顺）和attachment（依附）的性格特征。就象柏杨先生在《丑陋的中国人》中所说，中国人一看见当官的膝盖就发软，跪了千百年，都成习惯了。中国男人之所以是家畜而不是野兽，鄙人以为，也许和千百年来的饮食以及饮食习惯造成的进化上的生理差异有关。

        众所周知，domestic animals 大都是herbivores（食草动物），因为吃草，所以不需要太多bile（胆汁）来帮助消化，消化主要依靠肠子（gut，俗称下水，和下水道 gutter的功能相似）的蠕动。一般而言，进化的生理结果就是，食草动物的胆囊（gall bladder）较小，肠子gut比较长，比如羊肠小道，小肚鸡肠等。wild animals当中的出类拔萃者大都是carnivores（食肉动物），因为吃肉，需要大量bile（胆汁）来帮助消化，其进化结果就是胆囊较大， gut比较短。

        西方人和中国人在胆囊与性格的关系的认识上不约而同。胆大（gallant）就是指胆囊（gall bladder）大。西方人把bile称为发怒液，直接导致性格的暴躁。尽管人是omnivore（杂食动物），但相对而言中国人千百年来吃肉少，食草多，结果必然是胆囊（gall bladder）小而肠子gut长，表现在性格上就象牛羊一样docile，心思如肠子那样曲里拐弯。西方人历史上食肉多，吃草少，结果刚好相反，表现在性格上就如虎狼一般的aggressive（进攻性的）和vulpine（狡诈的）。

        德国人也说过：Man is what he eats. （人吃什么象什么）。由此可见，辜鸿铭先生的家畜野兽之说是有一定道理的。这里，鄙人为中国男人是家畜的观点找到一点生物学论据，以咨玩笑。
